Josie Owen

I am a Solicitor in the Litigation Department and qualified in July 2026, having worked in litigation for around three and a half years.

Originally from Devon and Somerset, I enjoy helping people navigate the stressful and often unfamiliar situations that can arise when disputes occur. I take a practical and personable approach to resolving problems, with a focus on negotiating pragmatic solutions wherever possible so that clients can move forward with their lives.

I continue to find litigation genuinely interesting, particularly because of the strong client relationships it allows you to build during what can be difficult periods in people’s lives. No two days are the same, and the variety of work means there is always something new to learn, which suits my endless curiosity and desire to develop my knowledge.

I joined Chubb Bulleid because of its great culture, strong reputation and longstanding presence within the local community. I enjoy being part of a firm that understands its clients and the communities it serves.

What I do

I act for clients on both sides of a dispute, whether they are looking to bring a claim or defend a claim made against them. I also advise clients who are not yet involved in formal litigation but want to understand their legal position, assess potential risks and consider their options before deciding what to do next.

I work with a broad range of clients, including individuals, companies, organisations and charities. My clients come from a variety of backgrounds and industries and may include farmers, mobile home park owners, employees and property owners.

A significant part of my work involves property-related disputes and concerns. This includes matters such as the eviction of tenants or trespassers, housing disrepair claims, applications for orders for sale, boundary disputes and adverse possession claims.

I also regularly advise clients on contractual disputes. Where an agreement has unfortunately gone wrong, I help clients understand their rights and obligations and work towards a practical resolution.

My work also extends to contentious private client matters, including disputes concerning the validity of wills and contentious estate matters, as well as some employment work.

Day to day, my work involves managing competing deadlines across client matters and court orders, reviewing and assessing documents and information, researching points of law, advising clients on their position and the risks involved, and discussing pragmatic ways forward. I also liaise with counsel, draft court documents, notices and settlement agreements, prepare court bundles and manage correspondence throughout a matter.

Ultimately, my role is about taking what can often feel like a complicated and stressful situation and helping clients understand it, navigate it and, wherever possible, bring it to a sensible conclusion.

What do you do when you’re not in the office?

When I’m not in the office, I enjoy keeping fit through the gym, yoga and pilates, and I love surfing when the conditions are good — which, if you know, is rare.

Outside of that, I enjoy travelling, exploring new places in our campervan, eating good food, and spending time with friends and family.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be doing?

I’d like to believe I would be a music artist, singing at Glastonbury Festival. Thankfully, I am a lawyer saving everybody’s ears.

What made you want to become a solicitor?

I enjoy problem-solving, developing my knowledge and working closely with clients. Every matter presents a different challenge, and the combination of learning, problem-solving and helping people is what makes being a solicitor so rewarding.
