James Mitchell

I have been a commercial property solicitor since qualifying in 2015 and an associate at Chubb Bulleid since 2023. I specialise in property development and enjoy dealing with complex and challenging transactions. I am fortunate to work as a part of a highly experienced, collaborative team advising on projects of local and regional importance.

What I do

I act for landowners, promoters and SME developers in connection with the disposal and acquisition of land for residential, commercial and mixed-used development. I advise on conditional contracts, option, promotion and collaboration agreements and overage provisions. I also deal with secured borrowing (acquisition and/or development finance), site set-up, infrastructure agreements and plot disposals, including to commercial tenants pursuant to agreements for lease and to registered providers by way of “golden brick” agreements.

I undertake a wide range of other commercial property work in addition, with particular expertise in investment sales and purchases and all aspects of commercial landlord and tenant work.

I get to know each client and their specific commercial requirements so that I can tailor my advice accordingly.

A bit more about me

What do you do when you’re not in the office?

I have two young children, so life understandably revolves around them. We all love being outdoors and roaming the countryside together when they are not busy with other activities. Music has always played a central role in my life, and I play the piano and go to concerts and the theatre as often as I can. I have recently rediscovered a passion for treading the boards myself and have thoroughly enjoyed appearing in a couple of plays at my local theatre.

What’s something clients are often surprised to learn about you?

I have a degree in French and spent a year living in a small town in the south of France trying to teach English to reluctant teenagers and eating copious quantities of Roquefort. Sadly, I rarely speak French these days, but it is always a pleasure to return to France and find my feet again. People also seem surprised to discover that I have an eclectic taste in music, including a penchant for metal.
